Thought of the week – Feet
The human foot is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints (20 of which are actively articulated), and more than a hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Some people take very good care of their feet. Others don’t lavish any attention on them and I wonder how many of us just take them for granted.
As you read this I’d like you to bring your attention down to your feet. Stand still or sit for a few moments and place both feet flat on the ground. Notice the sensations of your feet on the ground. Any tingling, heat, cold, sore spots or are they relaxed. Next I’d like you to bring your attention under your feet. Move your feet so that you can feel the floor solidly under them. See that the four corners of your feet are placed on the floor. Feel the soles of your feet connect with the floor, and press down equally with all four corners of your feet. The base of the big toes, the base of the little toes, the inner heel and the outer heel, so that you feel stable and grounded.
This simple exercise of noticing your feet even for a few short moments will naturally create body awareness, calm the mind and cultivates sharper awareness. It’s also grounding, as it helps bring you out of your thoughts. It can be a fantastic stepping stone to bringing mindful attention to where you are in your day.
